Change Windows Administrator Password [INFO]

Below are the steps on how to change your username or password in major operating systems, online services, and other locations.

Note: Unless you’re the administrator or root of the system, you need to know the password of the account before it can be changed.

1) For Windows Server 2012

  1. Firstly, log into your server via Remote Desktop.
  2. Once logged in, press your Windows key and type Administrative Tools.
  3. Double click on Computer Management.
  4. Then expand Local Users and Groups.
  5. Click on Users.
  6. After that, right-click on Administrator. Click on Set Password > Proceed.  
  7. Type your new password in both fields and lastly press OK.

2) For Windows Server 2008 R2

  1. First, you need to log into your server via Remote Desktop.
  2. Next, right-click on Computer and select Manage.
  3. Double click on Configuration.
  4. Then expand Local Users and Groups and then select Users.
  5. Lastly, right-click on Administrator and choose Set Password, and then click Proceed.

3) For Windows Server 2003 

  1. Start by logging in to your server via Remote Desktop.
  2. After that, right-click on My Computer and select Manage.
  3. Expand Local Users and Groups and then select Users.
  4. Right-click on Administrator and choose Set Password and then click Proceed. 
  5. Lastly, type in the new password and select OK.

4) For Windows 10

Change Password

  1. Firstly, press the Windows key, type Sign-in options. Then press Enter.
  2. In the Password section, click the Change button.
  3. Next, verify your account by entering your Microsoft PIN.
  4. Lastly, type in your current password (A), choose a new password (B), confirm your new password (C), and click the Next button (D).

Change Username

Note: You may only change local accounts names, not Microsoft or administrator account names.

  1. Firstly, press the Windows key, type Control Panel, and then press Enter.
  2. After that, select User Accounts.
  3. Click User Accounts again.
  4. Near the middle of the window, click Manage another account.
  5. Then, select the account whose name you’d like to change.
  6. Select Change the account name.
  7. Lastly, choose a new account name (A) and then click the Change Name button (B).

5) For Windows 8

Change Password

  1. Firstly, open the Charms menu by pressing the Windows key plus the C key and select Settings.
  2. In Settings, select Change PC settings.
  3. In PC Settings, select Users.
  4. Lastly, select the Change your password option to change the password for your local Windows account.

Change Username

  1. From the Windows desktop, open the Charms menu by pressing the Windows key plus the C key and select Settings.
  2. In Settings, select Control Panel.
  3. Then select User Accounts.
  4. In the User Accounts window, select Change your account name to change the username for your local Windows account.

6) For Windows Vista and 7

Change Password

  1. First of all, open the Control Panel.
  2. Secondly, click Add or remove user accounts.
  3. Proceed by clicking the account you want to change.
  4. Lastly, remember to click Change the password.

Change Username

  1. To start changing your username, open the Control Panel.
  2. After that, click Add or remove user accounts.
  3. Click the account you want to change.
  4. Finally, click Change the account name.

7) For Windows XP

Change Password

  1. The very first step is to open the Control Panel.
  2. Then double-click the Users Accounts icon.
  3. Next, select the account you want to change.
  4. Select the option Change my name to change your username or Create a password or Change my password to change your password.

Note: Windows XP Home users can only change the administrator password through Safe Mode.

Change Username

  1. First off, open the Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Users Accounts icon.
  3. Select the account you want to change.
  4. Proceed by clicking Change My Name.
  5. Enter the new name you want to use and click the Change Name button.

7) For Windows 2000

Change Password

Microsoft Windows 2000 users can change their username by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del while in Windows to open the Windows Security window. From this window, click the “Change Password” button.

Enter your old password and the new password you want to use.

Change Username

To change the username of an account on Windows XP, you need to have an account with administrator rights. If you are logged in as an administrator or have an account with administrator rights, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Users and Password icon.
  3. Make sure “Users must enter a user and password to use this computer” is checked.
  4. Highlight the account you want to change the username for and click the Properties button.
  5. In Properties, you can change the username.

8) For Windows 95, 98, and ME

Change Password

To change your password or password settings in Windows 95, 98, or ME, follow the steps below.

  1. Start by opening the Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Passwords icon.
  3. In the Password Properties window, click the Change Windows Password button.

Note: The Windows password can also be changed through the Users icon in Control Panel.

Change Username

You can change the user settings in Windows 95/98 through the Users icon in Control Panel. However, this does not allow you to change the actual username. If you need to change the username, we suggest you create a copy of your existing username and use the new username. Below are the steps to do this.

  1. First of all, open the Control Panel.
  2. After that, ouble-click the Users icon.
  3. Highlight the user you want to make a copy of and click the Make a copy button.
  4. One final step is to follow the wizard in creating a new user account.
